Common examples

Familiar starting points in this category include ABBEY, ABBOT, ABYSS, ADDED, AFFIX, AFOOT, AGREE, ALLAH. In total, 789 of the 894 matches are in the common or familiar tiers.

How this list is built

A double letter is two identical letters next to each other; separated repeats do not qualify. Entries come from the American English portion of the English Speller Database, are normalised to lowercase alphabetic display words, and are sorted by commonness tier before alphabetical order.

What this pattern tells you

Adjacent pairs are different from repeated letters elsewhere in a word. LEVEL repeats L but has no adjacent double letter; BELLE contains LL and qualifies.

When solving a position puzzle, test the pair as two separate positions. Confirming one copy does not prove the neighboring copy is present.

The page shows the first 400 results to keep loading fast. The interactive finder searches the complete five-letter data shard and supports exact positions, included letters, and excluded letters.

Use this list well

Scan the common entries first, then use the on-page filter for a letter sequence. If you know where a letter belongs—or need to handle repeated letters—move to the finder rather than creating a separate search page.
